Grandma’s Green Bean Casserole

This green bean casserole is a delightful upgrade from the traditional version made with condensed soup. Ingredients

For the Green Beans:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ¼ cup diced onion
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar

For the Topping:

  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup crumbled buttery round crackers
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Green Beans: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute until smooth. Add the sour cream, diced onion, salt, and sugar, mixing well. Stir in the green beans until they are fully coated with the sauce. Transfer the mixture to a 2 1/2-quart casserole dish.
  3. Add the Cheese and Topping: Sprinkle the shredded Cheddar cheese evenly over the green bean mixture. In a small bowl, combine the crumbled crackers with melted butter, then sprinkle this mixture over the cheese.
  4. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake until the topping is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly, about 30 minutes.

Let the casserole cool before transferring it to an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove.

Freezing

You can freeze this casserole for up to six months. Place leftovers in zip-top bags or freezer-safe containers. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
