Equipment

  • Heavy-bottomed saucepan
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Spatula
  • candy thermometer

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Line a 9x13 inch baking dish with parchment paper or a silicone mat to prevent sticking.
  2. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine half a cup of unsalted butter, one cup of granulated sugar, a pinch of salt, and two tablespoons of water.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture reaches a deep golden brown color and a temperature of 300°F, about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Remove the pan from heat and stir in one teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  5. Quickly pour the hot toffee mixture onto the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
  6. Sprinkle a generous amount of chocolate chips over the surface and let them sit for about 2 minutes to soften.
  7. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee using a spatula.
  8. Sprinkle chopped nuts over the chocolate layer and gently press them into the melted chocolate.
  9. Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature for about 2 hours or refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  10. Once set, lift the toffee out using the parchment paper edges and break it into bite-sized pieces.
