Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Gather your baking dish and ingredients.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter. Add sliced onions and caramelize for 15–20 minutes.
  3. In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, whisk in 2 tablespoons of flour for 1 minute. Gradually add 1 cup of milk or cream, stirring until thickened. Mix in 1–2 cups of grated cheddar cheese.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine drained broccoli with caramelized onions. Pour the cheese sauce over and mix gently.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading evenly.
  6. Sprinkle fried onions on top. Alternatively, use panko breadcrumbs mixed with melted butter.
  7. Bake the casserole for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
  8. Remove from oven and let sit for a few minutes before serving.
