For the Coating
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour Gluten-free flour works well as substitute
  • 2 teaspoons Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust to taste
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper

  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs Panko recommended for extra crispiness
  • as needed Cooking Spray For spraying basket

Equipment

Method

Preparation Steps
  1. Peel the small onions and trim the tops, leaving the root end intact. Make deep cuts vertically from the top to the root, creating 8-12 petal-like sections. Rinse under cold water and set aside to dry.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  3. In another bowl, combine the eggs and buttermilk, whisking until smooth.
  4. Dip each onion first in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, and finally roll in the breadcrumbs, ensuring they are well coated.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and spray the basket with cooking spray. Place the coated onions in the basket, ensuring space for even cooking.
  6. Air fry for 15-20 minutes, checking halfway, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove from the fryer and let cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.
