Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 15x10 inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another mixing bowl, beat together the large eggs, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until well combined.
  4. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry mixture using a spatula, mixing just until combined.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared jelly roll pan and spread to the edges.
  6. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare a clean kitchen towel and sprinkle it generously with powdered sugar.
  8. Once baked, carefully invert the warm cake onto the prepared towel and roll the cake up with the towel inside.
  9. In a clean mixing bowl, beat the heavy whipping cream until soft peaks form, then gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
  10. Once the cake is fully cooled, unroll it gently and spread a layer of the whipped cream frosting evenly across the surface.
  11. Dust the rolled cake with a mix of cocoa and powdered sugar and add chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
  12. Chill the decorated Yule Log in the refrigerator for at least one hour before slicing and serving.
