  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs Opt for gluten-free breadcrumbs if necessary.
  • ½ cup Parmesan Cheese Swap with Pecorino Romano for a sharper bite.
  • 1 large Egg For a vegan alternative, use a flax egg.
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Fresh minced garlic can be substituted but may change consistency.
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder Fresh chopped onion works too but should be sautéed beforehand.
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Oregano Italian seasoning is a great substitute.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Essential for flavor enhancement; adjust to your taste.
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper Essential for flavor enhancement; adjust to your taste.
  • 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese Feel free to experiment with another melting cheese like fontina.

  • 1 medium Onion Shallots can serve as a milder alternative.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Fresh garlic provides a stronger taste.
  • 2 cups Beef Broth Replace with vegetable broth for a lighter touch.
  • 1 cup Guinness Stout Any dark stout works, or omit for non-alcoholic version using more broth.
  • 2 tablespoon All-Purpose Flour Opt for cornstarch or a gluten-free blend if needed.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce Soy sauce is a good substitute.
For Garnish
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Parsley Feel free to substitute with any favorite herb like thyme or chives.

Equipment

  • Oven-proof skillet
  • Large bowl
  • Meat Thermometer

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Gather your ingredients and equipment.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well for about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Take a portion of the meatball mixture, flatten it, insert a cube of mozzarella in the center, and encase the cheese. Create 12-16 meatballs.
  4. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the meatballs until golden brown on all sides, about 5 minutes.
  5. In the same skillet, lower the heat, and add butter. Once melted, add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir for 2 minutes to create a roux.
  7. Gradually stir in beef broth and Guinness, bring to a gentle simmer for 3-5 minutes until smooth.
  8. Add Worcestershire sauce and return the meatballs to the skillet, coating them with the gravy.
  9. Transfer the skillet to the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, ensuring meatballs reach 160°F internal temperature.
  10. Let cool for 5-10 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve.
