- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a 10x15-inch baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.
- Lay approximately 40 saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
- In a medium saucepan, melt 1 cup of unsalted butter. Stir in 1 cup of packed light brown sugar and bring to a boil, stirring constantly, for about 3 minutes.
- Quickly pour the bubbling toffee mixture over the arranged saltine crackers, spreading evenly.
- Bake in the oven for about 5 minutes until bubbly and slightly darkened.
- Remove from the oven and let sit for 2-3 minutes before sprinkling a layer of chocolate chips over the toffee.
- Add optional toppings like chopped nuts or candy canes, and let them adhere for a couple of minutes.
- Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to chill and set.
- Once set, use the edges of the foil to lift the crack out of the baking sheet and break into pieces.
