- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish with cooking spray or olive oil.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add 2 cups of uncooked penne pasta. Cook for 1 minute less than the package instructions, then drain.
- In a skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, then 1 lb of lean ground beef and 1 chopped onion. Add 1 tablespoon of garlic powder, 2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 7-8 minutes until browned.
- Stir in 1 cup of cottage cheese and the entire 24 oz jar of pasta sauce until well combined.
- Add the cooked penne pasta to the beef and cheese mixture, stirring gently until evenly mixed.
- Transfer the mixture to the greased casserole dish, spreading it evenly.
- Sprinkle 8 oz of shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.
- Bake for about 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and lightly golden.
- Let cool for a few minutes, then garnish with fresh basil and serve.
