Preparation Steps
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking dish with crumpled aluminum foil at the bottom.
- Rinse fresh mussels under cold running water, scrub the shells, and discard any broken or open ones.
- In a large pot, place cleaned mussels and add water. Cover and steam on medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes until opened.
- In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs, cheese, parsley, garlic, and oregano (if using). Drizzle with olive oil and mix well.
- Remove the top shell from each opened mussel, placing the mussel meat back onto the half-shell in the baking dish.
- Top each mussel generously with the breadcrumb mixture and drizzle with a little mussel cooking juice if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 7-10 minutes until the topping is golden brown and crispy.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
